About LZX files
The .LZX file extension represents a compressed archive format that sits in an awkward historical intersection. Primarily, it is a legacy archive format from the Amiga computing era (developed by Jonathan Forbes and Tomi Poutanen), used to squeeze files onto floppy disks with higher efficiency than competitors. However, the compression algorithm was later adopted by Microsoft for their Cabinet (COFF/CAB) files and Xbox updates.
The problem for modern users is that .LZX is effectively a "dead" format on standard operating systems. Windows 11 and macOS cannot open these files natively. While the compression is technically superior to standard Deflate, the proprietary nature of the Amiga variant and the internal-only nature of the Microsoft variant mean you usually hit a wall when trying to inspect the contents. You might encounter .LZX files when digging through old software archives, handling Xbox ISOs, or dealing with specific backup streams from SelectLine ERP systems.
To make the data actually usable, the best practice is converting the container to a universally supported format like ZIP or 7Z. For archiving purposes where metadata preservation is less critical than access, ZIP is the standard. For maximum compression similar to the original intent, 7Z is the preferred modern target.
Convert.Guru analyzes your LZX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted LZ, CPGZ, ZIP and RPM files.
The LZX Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our LZX converter.
