About LWI files
The .LWI extension represents two distinct file types that cause confusion for users. Most commonly, it acts as a LightWorks Image file, a texture format utilized by the LightWorks rendering engine (developed by LightWork Design, now part of Siemens). These files are often buried in legacy CAD project folders from software like ArchiCAD or Vectorworks that licensed the LightWorks engine for rendering. Because the format is proprietary and aged, standard image viewers and web browsers cannot open them. To use these textures in modern pipelines like Blender or Unreal Engine, you must convert them to standard formats like PNG (for lossless transparency) or JPG (for general use).
Alternatively, an .LWI file may be an LSMASH Works Index file. These are automatically generated when using the LSMASH plugin with AviSynth or VapourSynth to index video frames for smoother playback and seeking. Users typically find these lingering next to video files (like MP4 or MKV). Unlike image files, these indexes are not meant to be edited or converted. If you delete them, the software will simply regenerate them the next time the video is loaded. If you need to view the contents of an image-based .LWI file, simply drag and drop it here to determine the format and convert it immediately.
Use Convert.Guru to open and convert your LWI file.
If you want to convert LWI file to OBJ, FBX, DAE, 3DS, MAX, BLEND, MA, MB, C4D, STL or PLY, you can use Siemens LightWorks or similar software from the "Rendering Texture Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DWG, DAE, X3D, IGES, WRL, JT, SKP, 3DS, 3DM, OBJ, STEP or FBX files to LWI, try Siemens LightWorks or another comparable tool in the "Rendering Texture Storage" category.
The LWI Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our LWI converter.
