A .lwi file primarily serves one of two very distinct functions. It is either a proprietary LightWorks Image Texture file used in high-end 3D rendering engines by Siemens PLM, or it is an auto-generated Media Processing Index file created by video processing tools like L-SMASH Works, Adobe Premiere Pro, or Lightworks.
Both formats present significant user challenges. The LightWorks texture files are locked into their proprietary rendering ecosystem. You cannot preview them natively in Windows or macOS, and standard image editors will refuse to open them, making asset management practically blind. Conversely, if your .lwi file is a media cache index, it is merely a data map used for timeline scrubbing. It contains absolutely zero video or audio data, meaning users often mistakenly share these tiny index files instead of the actual heavy video files.
To overcome these limitations, you need to change the format. For LightWorks textures, converting to universal formats like PNG or JPG is essential for web viewing, or TGA and EXR for editing in mainstream software like Blender. For media cache files, conversion to text can extract metadata, though the file itself is mostly safely disposable.
