A .luf file is primarily a Siemens LOGO! Soft Comfort language update file, or occasionally a Lipikar Uniform Format file. Siemens uses this format to distribute UI language packs for its programmable logic controller (PLC) software. Structurally, the Siemens variant is simply a ZIP archive containing localized XML or text strings. The Lipikar variant is used by the Lipikar typing software to store multilingual text documents.
The main disadvantage of a .luf file is its strict software dependency. The Lipikar format is proprietary and undocumented, making it impossible to open in standard word processors like Microsoft Word. The Siemens variant requires Siemens LOGO! Soft Comfort for installation. Because it uses a custom extension, modern operating systems will not automatically recognize it as a standard archive, leading to frustrating "cannot open this file" errors.
To view or edit the contents of a Siemens .luf file, the best workaround is to convert or rename it to ZIP, which allows you to extract the internal XML or TXT dictionary files. For Lipikar documents, users typically want to convert to TXT or RTF to rescue trapped text data.
