The .LOF file extension is primarily associated with Leica Microsystems. It functions as an image object file containing high-resolution microscopy data captured by Leica Application Suite Advanced Fluorescence (LAS AF) software. Alternatively, .LOF files act as a plain-text List of Figures generated by the LaTeX typesetting system. A rare third usage is an Audacity File List from Audacity, which simply points to multiple audio tracks for batch processing.
The primary disadvantage of the Leica .LOF format is its proprietary, closed nature. You cannot open these files in standard image viewers like Windows Photos or macOS Preview. Analyzing microscopy data often requires a paid license for Leica's official suite or complex third-party tools like ImageJ with specific Bio-Formats plugins. The files are frequently massive and completely locked into the scientific imaging ecosystem, making collaboration with non-specialists difficult.
LaTeX and Audacity .LOF files share a different problem: they contain no actual media. They are purely text-based reference files. A LaTeX .LOF simply tells the compiler where figures are located to generate a table of contents, while an Audacity .LOF contains a text list of file paths. Users often confuse these files for the actual document or audio, leading to failed conversion attempts.
If you are dealing with a Leica file, the ideal target formats are TIFF for lossless scientific analysis or JPG for quick sharing.
