To convert other file formats to the "Material Definition" file type, you need software like Lumion or a similar tool.
An .LNM file is a proprietary material definition format used exclusively by Lumion, a leading architectural visualization software. These files store complex surface properties, including diffuse textures, normal maps, reflectivity, glossiness, and weathering settings, allowing architects to save and reuse specific looks across different projects.
The primary constraint of the .LNM format is its strict vendor lock-in; it is not a standard image file and cannot be opened in Adobe Photoshop, Blender, or generic 3D viewers. Users often struggle when attempting to extract the underlying texture maps (like JPG or PNG) from an .LNM file without having Lumion installed. Furthermore, version compatibility can be a problem, as materials saved in newer versions of Lumion may not load correctly in older iterations.
Since direct conversion to generic formats like MAT or MTL is not supported by third-party tools, the only practical workflow is to import the file into Lumion. From there, you can apply the material to a surface and render the result to JPG or PNG for web use or client presentations. For archiving or sharing material libraries, it is best to compress .LNM files into a ZIP archive to ensure all associated data remains intact during transfer.
