About LLM files
The .LLM file extension is primarily used for two distinct 3D applications: as a Material or Decal file in Quixel NDo, and as a Binary Avatar Mesh File for the virtual world Second Life by Linden Lab. In the context of 3D scanning, it can also represent a labeled Laser Measurement file generated by apps like Polycam. These files pose significant challenges for users. The .LLM format is highly proprietary and closed. Second Life mesh files contain compiled binary data specific to the platform's proprietary rendering engine, making it impossible to directly import them into standard 3D modeling software like Blender or Autodesk Maya. Similarly, Quixel NDo material data is locked to the Quixel ecosystem. This creates extreme vendor lock-in. Users usually want to convert .LLM files to standard 3D formats like OBJ, FBX, or DAE (Collada) to edit the meshes, or to image formats like PNG or TGA for material textures. However, because these are closed formats, standard online converters fail to parse the proprietary binary structures. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data.
