About LFF files

The .LFF extension is shared by three distinct technical formats, creating a common point of confusion for users. The most frequent use (approx. 28%) is the LibreCAD Font File, a proprietary vector font format used exclusively by the open-source 2D CAD application LibreCAD. Unlike standard TTF or OTF fonts, these files are stroke-based definitions optimized for CAD plotters rather than graphic design. They are incompatible with software like Microsoft Word or Adobe Illustrator, forcing users to convert them into standard vector formats like DXF or SVG if they wish to edit the glyphs or use them in other CAD suites like AutoCAD.

A secondary but critical use (approx. 9%) is the Lasergene Feature File generated by DNASTAR Lasergene software. These files contain genomic annotations and Regions of Interest (ROI) lists. The proprietary nature of this format locks valuable biological data inside the Lasergene ecosystem. Researchers often need to convert these files to CSV or XLSX to analyze the data in Microsoft Excel or standard bioinformatics formats like BED or GFF for visualization in tools like the Integrative Genomics Viewer (IGV).

Finally, .LFF files are used as firmware update containers for Zumtobel LITECOM lighting systems. These are internally GZIP compressed archives. While not "convertible" in the traditional sense, renaming the extension to GZ allows users to inspect the contents.
