About LEX files

The .lex file extension serves two distinct roles in computing. For standard users, it functions as a Lexicon Dictionary or spell-checker database utilized by software like Microsoft Word, Adobe Linguistic Library, and the Microsoft Chinese IME. These files store custom vocabulary and hyphenation rules. For software developers, a .lex file acts as source code for Flex or the classic Unix Lex utilities, containing rules to tokenize text inputs.

The main disadvantage of .lex dictionary files is their proprietary nature. Many are compiled into binary formats or compressed to speed up software spell-checking. This means you cannot read, edit, or extract your custom corporate dictionary without the original software. They lock your text data into a specific vendor ecosystem and cannot be accessed natively by modern web browsers. Developer .lex files, while usually plain text, require strict syntax and are useless unless processed by a compiler toolchain.

To free your data and migrate your custom dictionaries, you must convert these files. For dictionary files, convert to CSV or TXT. This extracts the raw vocabulary list for use in other platforms, databases, or text editors. For archiving developer source rules, convert to PDF/A.

Convert.Guru analyzes your LEX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted L, TEX, Y, PDF, TXT, LST and DXR files.
