About LEX files

The .LEX extension primarily refers to two distinct file types: Lexical Analyzer Source files used by developers and Dictionary Data files used by Microsoft software.

For developers, a .LEX file contains logic definitions for generating lexical analyzers using tools like flex or the original Unix Lex. These files are plain text but require compilation into C or C++ code to be executable. The challenge is that without the specific compiler environment, the file is just a script that cannot be run directly. Converting these to PDF creates sharable documentation of the code logic, while converting to TXT ensures they open in any basic editor without syntax errors.

For general users, .LEX files often function as proofing tools or User-Defined Dictionaries for Microsoft Office and Windows IME (Input Method Editor). These contain custom words, spelling patterns, or language rules. These files are frequently proprietary or binary-encoded, meaning they cannot simply be double-clicked to view the contents. Users typically need to extract the word lists to standard formats.
