About LBS files

The .LBS file functions primarily as a library file for Omnis Studio, a Rapid Application Development (RAD) environment. These files store application code, window layouts, menus, and data classes. Secondary variations of the .LBS extension are used as CAD symbol libraries for El-Project CAD software or label printing templates for Libra Elektronika.

To properly open and edit the main variation of this file, developers rely on Omnis Studio (previously managed by Raining Data). Because the .LBS format is heavily proprietary and closed-source, it presents significant limits. Files are saved in a compiled, binary state. This means they are completely unreadable in standard text editors, cannot be opened natively by modern operating systems, and require an expensive software license to access or modify the internal application logic.

When sharing code or migrating systems, users usually need to convert .LBS files to open standards. The best target formats are XML, JSON, or TXT for developer code, and DXF or DWG if dealing with the CAD symbol variation. Converting to these formats prevents vendor lock-in and allows version control systems to track code changes. However, exporting data often strips away the proprietary compiled structures.

This file format is exceptionally difficult to open or convert externally because it acts as a complex binary database for proprietary application objects. Standard online converters inevitably fail to process it. Only the original software contains the exact mapping required to decode the libraries. Despite this, just drag and drop your file into convert.guru to identify the format, view its internal metadata, and extract raw text strings. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your LBS file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted RBN, GOB and BLB files.

The LBS Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our LBS converter.
