Extract text from Evidence and backup files (L01)

The .L01 file format primarily functions as an EnCase Logical Evidence File, developed by OpenText (formerly Guidance Software). Unlike a physical drive image, the .L01 format acts as a container that stores a logical collection of specific files, folders, and cryptographic metadata for digital forensics. A secondary use for .L01 files is as an Apple iPhone backup file created by the iBackupBot software to archive iOS device data.
These files are highly proprietary and strictly bound to specialized software ecosystems. To fully open, verify, and extract an EnCase .L01 file, digital forensic investigators typically rely on expensive, license-restricted tools like EnCase Forensic, FTK Imager, or Autopsy. Users often need to convert or extract .L01 files to access the enclosed evidence or backup data without paying for premium forensic or recovery software.
However, the format is severely limited for general use. It cannot be opened by standard operating systems or web browsers, and it often employs proprietary compression and cryptographic hashing (like MD5 or SHA-1) to preserve strict evidence integrity. The best "conversion" targets are actually extractions to standard formats like TXT, CSV, or extracting the raw embedded files (e.g., JPG, PDF, DOCX).

This is why this file format is notoriously difficult to open or convert. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data.
