About KMY files

The .KMY file is a personal finance data file created by KMyMoney, an open-source personal finance management application. It serves as the primary storage mechanism for a user's financial accounts, transaction history, categories, budgets, and payee information.

Under the hood, .KMY files are typically GZIP compressed archives containing a structured XML file. While efficient for the application, this creates a strict dependency. Users frequently need to convert these files because .KMY is highly specialized and proprietary in its schema. You cannot open it natively in Microsoft Excel or standard web browsers. Sharing your financial data with an accountant or migrating to competing software like GNUCash or Quicken requires installing the specific desktop application just to perform an export.

The most practical conversion targets are CSV, XML, or QIF for data migration, and PDF for generating static, readable financial reports. Be aware that exporting to flat formats like CSV will strip away complex relationships between nested accounts.

Because this is an application-specific state file, standard online converters fail to process it. Often, only the original software can properly map and export the relational data.

Convert.Guru analyzes your KMY file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted EDI, PCK and DJVU files.
