About K3B files

The .K3B file is a project configuration file used exclusively for optical disc authoring. It stores the structural layout of a CD, DVD, or Blu-ray disc prior to burning, mapping directory trees, volume names, burn speeds, and the absolute paths of media files located on a local hard drive.

This format is natively created and managed by K3b, the premier disc burning application built for the KDE Linux desktop environment.

Users often attempt to convert .K3B files under the mistaken assumption that the file contains actual audio, video, or archive data. A severe limitation of this format is that it acts merely as a blueprint. It does not store media payloads. If a user transfers the .K3B file to a different computer or deletes the original source files, the embedded file paths break, rendering the project useless. Furthermore, this format is highly specific to Linux and lacks native support on Windows, macOS, or modern web browsers.

The most practical conversion targets for a .K3B file are plain text formats like XML or TXT. Converting to text allows users to salvage the metadata and review the list of source files originally intended for the disc.

This file format is difficult to open or convert because its internal XML schema is proprietary to the K3b software engine. Standard online media converters fail completely because they attempt to process media streams that do not exist within the file. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the project data to a final disc image. Our engine can inspect the file, extract the internal XML markup, and allow you to view the contained file paths and project settings directly in your browser.

Convert.Guru analyzes your K3B file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The K3B Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our K3B converter.
