Extract text from K01 files
To convert your K01 file to another format, you need Clarion or other Database software.
To convert other file formats to the "Index File" file type, you need software like Clarion or a similar tool.
A .K01 file is primarily a Database Key Index file used by SoftVelocity Clarion and Raima Database Manager. Unlike standard documents, this file does not contain your actual records (names, dates, financials); instead, it acts as a high-speed map (B-Tree index) that points the software to specific data located in a companion DAT, TPS, or TBL file.
Because .K01 files are strictly binary navigation tools, you cannot open them in Microsoft Excel or Notepad to read the content. Opening one directly will result in a stream of unintelligible gibberish. Users often encounter these files when attempting to migrate legacy accounting systems (like Kalamazoo) or recovering old DOS-based databases. To access the meaningful information, you must have the parent data file and use the original database software to export the records to a usable format like CSV, SQL, or PDF. If the file is part of a split archive (e.g., backup.k01, backup.k02), it requires the specific compression tool used to create it to reassemble the original data.
