About JTD files

A .JTD file is the native document format for Ichitaro, a Japanese word processor developed by JustSystems. While similar to Microsoft Word's DOC format, Ichitaro files are specifically engineered for the complexities of the Japanese language, including tategaki (vertical writing layout) and strict genko yoshi (manuscript paper) grid alignment. The primary problem for users is that opening these files without Ichitaro - which is Windows-only and paid - is notoriously difficult. While Microsoft Word theoretically supports opening them, it requires a specific legacy converter add-in that is often missing from non-Japanese system locales. To view the document exactly as the author intended (preserving vertical text flow), convert it to PDF. To edit the text in a standard environment, convert to DOCX, though expect some layout shifts where proprietary Japanese formatting features do not translate perfectly.

Users also converted DOCX, TXT, ZIP, 19, 30 and PWP files.

The JTD Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our JTD converter.
