A .JGD file is predominantly known as a Jasc Gradient file, a proprietary resource format used by Paint Shop Pro (originally developed by Jasc Software, now maintained by Corel). These files function as presets, storing mathematical definitions of color transitions - including specific color stops, transparency levels, and focal points - to apply gradient fills to raster images.
The main limitation with .JGD files is their specialized nature. Unlike a standard JPG or PNG image, a .JGD file does not contain a viewable picture; it contains the instructions to create one. Consequently, you cannot preview these files in standard operating system viewers, web browsers, or non-Corel image editors like Adobe Photoshop. This creates a significant "vendor lock-in" issue where valuable design assets are trapped in an obsolete or paid ecosystem. Additionally, legacy files created in early versions of Jasc Paint Shop Pro may encounter compatibility quirks even in modern Corel versions.
To make these assets usable again, the best approach is conversion. For quick visualization or use as a background, converting to PNG or JPG is ideal.
