About J2K files
A .j2k file is a raw JPEG 2000 Codestream. Unlike the more common jp2 container format, a J2K file contains only the compressed image data without the header metadata, color space specifications, or intellectual property rights often required by modern software. It is heavily used in Medical Imaging (DICOM), Digital Cinema (DCP), and Geospatial mapping due to its superior wavelet-based compression, which allows for both lossless archiving and lossy storage in a single architecture.
However, .j2k files are effectively invisible to the web. Major browsers like Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, and Mozilla Firefox do not support them natively. Even Apple Safari, which historically offered some support, has deprecated it in newer versions. Opening these files typically requires specialized professional software or legacy plugins. To view, share, or print these images, users must convert them to JPG for general use, PNG for high-quality graphics, or PDF for document archiving.

The J2K Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our J2K converter.
