Extract text from IWS files

The .IWS extension is a shared battleground for two very different digital environments: software development and industrial design. Most commonly, you will encounter this as an IntelliJ IDEA Workspace file, an XML-based document generated by JetBrains IDEs. These files store local, user-specific preferences - such as open file history, window layouts, and asset positioning - that are unique to your machine. Alternatively, in the design sector, .IWS refers to project files created by I-PRO for eyewear design or Intergraph Smart 3D for plant engineering. These are often complex, proprietary formats (sometimes GZIP-compressed) containing vector data, 3D models, or workspace configurations.
The friction with .IWS files depends heavily on their origin. For developers, IntelliJ workspace files are a notorious source of version control conflicts. Because they track your specific screen layout, they change constantly; committing them to Git clutters repositories and overrides your teammates' settings. They are not meant to be shared, yet they often get stuck in transfer pipelines. For I-PRO or Intergraph users, the challenge is proprietary lock-in. These files require expensive, specialized heavy-client software just to view a design, making them impossible to open on mobile devices or standard office computers without conversion.
For IntelliJ users, the most practical conversion is to XML or TXT to inspect configuration data without launching the heavy IDE, or simply deleting the file to reset the workspace (the IDE will regenerate it). For I-PRO and Intergraph files, the goal is usually accessibility: convert to PDF for client proofs and archiving, or JPG/PNG for quick web previews.
