The .ITM file extension lacks a single standard. It primarily serves as an Item Data File across completely unrelated applications. The most common uses include game item definitions for Tibia, BioWare's Infinity Engine, and Diablo II. In engineering, Autodesk Fabrication software uses .ITM for ductwork and MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing) components. In navigation, software like MagicMaps and TomTom use it to store GPS itineraries.
Because multiple developers use the exact same extension, users face extreme file fragmentation. You cannot open an Autodesk component in Diablo II, nor will a TomTom itinerary work in Tibia. These files are highly proprietary, undocumented, and locked to their parent software. They often lack human-readable text, making them impossible to edit in standard text editors. Navigation .ITM files are occasionally just renamed ZIP archives, but you must know the source to extract them safely.
