The .itm extension is a classic example of a generic filename collision, most commonly representing Game Item Data files used by RPG engines like the BioWare Infinity Engine (Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale) or the MMORPG Tibia. In this context, the file is a binary container holding specific attributes - weight, cost, damage, and graphical references - that the game engine reads to generate inventory objects. Users commonly encounter problems here because these files are not human-readable; you cannot simply open them in Notepad to tweak a sword's stats without corrupting the file structure. Modders and server administrators typically need to convert these binaries into editable JSON, XML, or CSV formats to batch-edit item properties or migrate data between server versions.
A secondary but significant industrial use case is within Autodesk Fabrication products (CADmep, ESTmep, CAMduct). Here, an .itm file describes a specific MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing) component, such as a piece of ductwork or a pipe fitting, containing geometry, connectors, and cost data. The challenge for engineers is that these files are proprietary to the Autodesk ecosystem. To share this component data with clients who don't have a Fabrication license, or to generate a Bill of Materials (BOM), users typically need to convert the data payload to PDF for viewing or Excel (.XLSX) for cost estimation.
