The .ITA file extension is heavily fragmented and used across completely unrelated software applications. Most commonly, it functions as a proprietary binary data file for WaveMetrics Igor Pro, a scientific data analysis application. It is also used as desktop icon theme packages by the legacy IconTweaker software, as UTF-16 (LE) localization text files in Epic Games Unreal Engine, and as IEEE ATLAS test procedure source files for aircraft technical documentation. Some users even append it to Adobe PDF files to denote an Italian language version.
Because .ITA files lack a single standardized structure, dealing with them is frustrating. Proprietary binary formats like those used by Igor Pro require highly specific, expensive software to read or export. Legacy software like IconTweaker is obsolete, meaning native support is virtually non-existent on modern operating systems. Standard online converters typically fail because they cannot guess which of the many completely different formats a specific .ITA file happens to be.

If the file is an IconTweaker theme, it is actually a compressed ZIP archive in disguise; renaming or converting it allows you to extract the raw image files.
