About INKML files

The .INKML file type represents the Ink Markup Language, an open XML-based data format developed by the W3C to standardize the storage and exchange of digital ink data. Unlike standard images, an .INKML file stores the raw mathematical "traces" of a stylus or electronic pen, including X/Y coordinates, pen pressure, tilt, and timestamps. While this makes the format incredibly detailed for handwriting analysis and biometric authentication, it presents a major usability hurdle: most standard image viewers and web browsers cannot display it. Opening the file typically reveals lines of XML code rather than the visual sketch or handwriting. To use these files in documents, web pages, or presentations, users generally need to convert them into universally compatible formats. Converting to SVG is ideal for preserving the scalable vector paths of the strokes, while PDF serves best for archiving documents, and PNG is recommended for quick sharing on the web.

Convert.Guru analyzes your INKML file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted INK, JPG, BIN and NGP files.

The INKML Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our INKML converter.
