The .INKML file is an XML-based format developed by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) to store and exchange digital ink data. It captures real-time pen strokes, X/Y coordinates, pressure, and tilt from electronic styluses used on tablets or interactive whiteboards.
While an open standard, the main disadvantage of the .INKML format is its lack of native visual support. Because it is a specialized data markup, operating systems, standard image viewers, and web browsers cannot natively render the sketches or handwriting. If you share an .INKML file with a colleague, they will likely see lines of raw XML text instead of the actual drawing.
To make this data visually accessible, you must convert it. The best target formats are SVG for scalable vector editing, PDF for secure document sharing, or standard raster formats like PNG.
Because .INKML relies on complex contextual markup rather than standard pixels or standard vector paths, many basic online image converters fail to interpret it. The original software that generated the strokes - or advanced vector editors like Inkscape - are often required to accurately render the curves and pressure sensitivity.
