To convert other file formats to the "TIFF-based Raster Image" file type, you need software like Iridient Developer or a similar tool.

About IMJ files

The .IMJ file is primarily a highly specialized TIFF-based raster image utilized in high-end digital photography workflows. Most commonly generated by Iridient Developer, these files act as complex containers that embed standard JPEG-compressed photographic content alongside extensive EXIF data and camera exposure metadata. In rare instances (under 1%), an .IMJ file may be a legacy IMPACJ Compressed Bitmap Image created by the Pegasus Imaging Corporation, utilizing the obscure TIFF compression method identifier 103 based on DCT compression.

Despite containing standard image data internally, the obscure .IMJ extension serves as a frustrating compatibility barrier. Because it is non-standard, default operating system viewers like Windows Photos or macOS Preview fail to recognize the file, actively locking users out of their image data. You cannot upload an .IMJ file to social media, embed it in a presentation, or send it reliably via email without triggering "unsupported format" warnings. The file often requires specialized, paid software just to preview the visual content.

Converting your .IMJ files is the only pragmatic workaround for sharing and everyday use. We recommend converting to JPG or PNG for instant web compatibility and easy sharing, though some proprietary Iridient processing metadata may be discarded. If you need to archive the image or edit it further in software like Adobe Photoshop, target the TIFF format to retain maximum structural integrity and image quality.

Because .IMJ relies on proprietary wrappers and obscure compression algorithms, standard online converters often immediately reject the file. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data. However, convert.guru can still identify the file format, inspect the file, and show text or internal content. Just drag and drop your file to see what it is and convert it if supported. If our analysis detects a supported underlying TIFF or embedded JPEG format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your IMJ file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted JPEG, HEIC, JPG, 4TH, IDENTIFIER and USP files.

The IMJ Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our IMJ converter.
