About IMG3 files
The .IMG3 file is a specialized Apple Encrypted Container format used primarily in legacy iOS firmware (iPhone 3GS era). Unlike standard disk images or photos, an IMG3 file is a digital envelope that wraps critical boot components - such as the kernel, recovery mode logos, and device tree - in layers of AES encryption and digital signatures.
Users typically encounter these files when extracting an IPSW (iPhone Software) archive or attempting to customize boot logos on jailbroken devices. The main source of friction is that .IMG3 files are not viewable images; you cannot open them in Photoshop or Windows Photo Viewer. They require specific decryption keys (GID/UID) matching the device's processor to unlock. For most users, the goal is to convert the embedded applelogo component to PNG for viewing, or to decrypt the kernel into a raw BIN file for security analysis. Without specialized command-line tools like xpwntool or img3tool, these files remain inaccessible black boxes.
Convert.Guru analyzes your IMG3 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert IMG3 file to SYS, DLL, EXE, DRV, VXD, 386, COM, BAT, CMD, SCR, PIF or LNK, you can use iTunes or similar software from the "Apple Firmware Container" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert MSI, EXE, REG, MST, LNK, CAB, CAT, DRV, INF, SYS, MSU or DLL files to IMG3, try iTunes or another comparable tool in the "Apple Firmware Container" category.
The IMG3 Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our IMG3 converter.
