About ILL files

The .ILL file extension serves a dual purpose, primarily acting as a legacy or alternative format for Adobe Illustrator Artwork files, while secondarily functioning as an Illuminance Data file for the Radiance lighting simulation suite. As a design file, it stores highly detailed vector graphics, including mathematical paths, curves, colors, and complex layer metadata. As a simulation dataset, it contains raw, text-based lux measurements representing indoor daylight levels over time. Design files are natively managed by Adobe Illustrator, whereas lighting data is processed by specialized scientific software like DAYSIM.

Users frequently need to convert .ILL files because of strict software dependencies and poor compatibility. Modern operating systems and third-party viewers typically do not associate the .ILL extension with vector graphics, causing immediate compatibility errors. Radiance files are completely unreadable to standard spreadsheet tools without specialized parsing. For design workflows, converting the file to standard PDF or SVG formats is crucial for client review and web integration, though some proprietary Adobe layers might be flattened in the process. For scientific data, converting the raw text into CSV or XLSX is required for any meaningful data analysis.

Both variations of this file are notoriously difficult to process. The Adobe format is heavily closed and proprietary, meaning often only the original software can properly render the advanced artboards and proprietary vector effects. Meanwhile, standard online converters mistakenly assume every .ILL file is a broken image and fail entirely when encountering scientific simulation text. Just drag and drop your file to see what it is and convert it if supported. convert.guru can identify the file format, inspect the underlying hex structure, and show the embedded text or vector content. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your ILL file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted ILV, AIC and FXG files.

FAQ

The ILL Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ILL converter.
