About ILL files

The .ill extension is a dual-purpose format primarily associated with Adobe Illustrator, serving as a non-standard or legacy alias for the industry-standard AI vector graphic format. While typically containing high-precision vector paths, text, and layers used in professional design, users run into issues because modern operating systems and third-party viewers do not natively associate .ill with Illustrator. This forces users to manually associate the file or rename the extension to AI to regain functionality. Secondarily, .ill files serve as Lighting Simulation Illuminance Data within the Radiance suite. These are text-based scientific files storing lux values for architectural analysis. Because they are raw data output, they are unreadable to standard image viewers and must be converted to CSV or Excel for meaningful analysis or PDF for reporting. For design files, the best practice is converting to PDF for client proofs or SVG for web usage. For simulation data, converting to TXT or XLSX ensures accessibility.
