About IGM files
The .igm extension serves two distinct, industry-specific purposes, often causing confusion for users outside these niches.
1. Import General Manifest (Primary)
Most commonly, an .igm file is a digital Import General Manifest, a statutory document required by the Indian Customs EDI System (ICES). Filed by carriers before goods arrive, it acts as a digital "passport" for cargo, detailing the bill of lading, consignee, and goods description. These files are typically generated by offline customs utility software (like ICES 1.5) in a strict EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) flat-file format designed for machine processing, not human reading.
The Problem: Because they are raw data files, opening them in a standard text editor reveals a dense, delimiter-separated mess that is hard to audit manually.
The Solution:
- For Auditing: Convert the .igm data to Microsoft Excel (.XLSX) to filter and check bill of lading numbers.
- For Archiving: Convert to PDF to generate a human-readable document that mimics the official paper manifest.
2. Indigo Renderer Material (Secondary)
Alternatively, an .igm file is a material definition used by Indigo Renderer, a photorealistic 3D rendering engine. These are XML-based text files that define optical properties - such as albedo, bump maps, and refraction indices - for 3D models. While they are plain text, they are proprietary to the Indigo engine.
The Solution:
- For Editing: Since it is XML, you can edit material properties in any code editor (like VS Code).
- For Sharing: Users often compress these into PIGM (Packed Indigo Material) files to include referenced textures in a single archive.
Convert.Guru analyzes your IGM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted EDI, JPG, PNG, SDOCX, NAK, STF and GED files.
The IGM Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our IGM converter.
