About IGB files

The .igb file is an Intrinsic Graphics Binary file. It stores 3D models, skeletons, and animation data specifically for video games built on the Intrinsic Alchemy middleware engine. These files were commonly used in early 2000s titles like Marvel: Ultimate Alliance and X-Men Legends. Because they contain compiled game assets, they are highly optimized for engine performance rather than user editing.

Opening an .igb file today is a frustrating process. The format is entirely proprietary, undocumented, and heavily tied to obsolete middleware. Modern 3D software cannot open these files natively. Modding communities have had to reverse-engineer the format, creating custom Python import scripts for Blender or Autodesk Maya just to view the base geometry.

Users typically need to convert .igb files to modern, standard 3D formats for editing or archiving. The best conversion targets are OBJ for static 3D meshes, or FBX if you need to retain rigging and skeletal animation data. Be aware that proprietary material shaders and custom engine physics data will almost certainly be lost during conversion.

Because this is a closed, proprietary format, standard online converters fail to process it. Only the original engine or highly specific community scripts can properly read the compiled data. If our analysis detects a supported embedded format, viewing or partial conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your IGB file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted PNG and JPEG files.

The IGB Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our IGB converter.
