The .IEF file extension is heavily fragmented, primarily used as a Chrome OS image share file. These files act as ZIP containers holding image data shared across the Google Chrome OS ecosystem. Alternatively, .IEF (Image Extraction Format) is used by the InShot Video Editor app as a proprietary project wrapper containing MP4 video data, or by Hexagon's Q-DAS software for statistical configuration exports.
The main disadvantage of the .IEF format is its ambiguous and proprietary nature. Because multiple unrelated applications use the exact same .IEF extension, your operating system will often fail to open it automatically. Files created by InShot lock your media inside an app-specific mobile ecosystem, making it difficult to view the raw video on a desktop PC. Furthermore, standard file converters usually fail because they rely solely on the file extension rather than the actual binary content.
Users typically need to convert .IEF to standard formats like ZIP to extract Chrome OS images, or to MP4 to play InShot video files directly across different devices. For Q-DAS configuration files, a more readable text format might be desired.
This format is notoriously difficult to open or convert because generic tools cannot guess whether the file contains an image archive, a video stream, or statistical data. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data.
