About I01 files

The .i01 extension typically represents one of two distinct file types, creating frequent confusion for users.

  1. Intergraph Drawing File (Primary Use): Generated by Hexagon Intergraph software (specifically PDS or Smart 3D), this is a CAD drawing or plot file. These files act as sequential backups or design iterations (e.g., design.i01, design.i02). Technically, they are often proprietary variations of the MicroStation DGN format. Constraints: They are strictly locked to the industrial ecosystem; you cannot open them in standard viewers like Adobe Acrobat or generic CAD tools without first converting them.
  2. Split Disk Image Segment: A binary slice of a larger disk image created by tools like UltraISO or DVD Shrink. Large files (like game installers or system backups) are split into chunks (.isz, .i01, .i02) to fit on smaller media or bypass file transfer limits. Friction Point: Users often try to open the .i01 file directly. This will fail. You strictly need the "master" file (usually ISZ or MDS) in the same folder to mount or extract the data.
