About EDC files
The .EDC extension is highly ambiguous, most frequently associated with shellSAFE secure document containers developed by CertSIGN. These files are essentially encrypted archives used to protect sensitive data during transfer or storage. A significant source of friction for users is that .EDC files are proprietary and locked; you cannot simply "convert" them to PDF or DOCX without the original password and the specific shellSAFE utility to decrypt them first. Once decrypted, the internal files (often PDFs or images) can be extracted and managed normally.
Another common technical variation is the Edje Data Collection file used by the Enlightenment window manager on Linux. These are compiled interface definition files containing images, fonts, and layout scripts. Users often need to convert these back to editable source code or extract the assets (images/fonts) because the binary .EDC format is not human-readable. For this, developers use the edje_decc tool to decompile the file into source .EDC (text) and asset folders. Less common uses include Maxon Motor configuration files (which are often plain XML text that can be renamed to XML for viewing) and legacy KingGrid encrypted PDFs. To determine your specific format, try opening the file in a text editor like Notepad++; if you see "<XML>" headers, it is a configuration file; if you see illegible binary strings, it is likely a CertSIGN archive or Enlightenment theme.
Convert.Guru analyzes your EDC file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted ENC, EWF, E02 and E01 files.
The EDC Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our EDC converter.
