About HYS files
The .HYS file extension is primarily a Hysitron Nanoindentation Raw Data file. These files are generated by highly specialized scientific instruments, such as the Hysitron TI 950 Nanoindenter, now manufactured by Bruker. They store raw mechanical testing data, including precise load, displacement, and time measurements. A secondary use for .HYS is storing Magnetic Hysteresis Loop Data from Vibrating Sample Magnetometers (VSM), which researchers often analyze using software like OriginPro.
The main disadvantage of .HYS files is their highly proprietary nature. You cannot open them natively in standard web browsers or standard office suites. Viewing the full data structure usually requires expensive, specialized software like Bruker's TriboScan or OriginLab's OriginPro. This restriction creates a major bottleneck when sharing raw data with colleagues or clients who do not hold these specific software licenses.
To make the data usable for general analysis, researchers usually need to convert .HYS files to standard tabular formats like CSV, TXT, or XLSX. Converting to these universally supported formats allows for custom plotting in Excel, Python, or MATLAB. Keep in mind that proprietary instrument metadata or calibration settings stored in the original file header might be dropped during the extraction process.
Because .HYS is a closed, proprietary format, standard online file converters almost always fail to process it. Often, only the original instrument software can properly read or export the full, uncorrupted dataset. Our tool will inspect the binary or text structure of the file. If our analysis detects unencrypted text or a supported embedded format, viewing the raw data or extracting a basic conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your HYS file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The HYS Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our HYS converter.
