About HMX files

An .HMX file primarily functions as an uncompiled documentation project file created by older versions of Help & Manual (specifically version 4). It stores raw text, structural hierarchies, and layout parameters used to generate final user manuals. Alternatively, the .HMX extension is used as a compiled 3D game map file for legacy PC titles like Heavy Metal: F.A.K.K. 2, storing level geometry, textures, and entity placements based on a modified Quake III engine. The main disadvantage of an .HMX file is its proprietary nature. It is not meant for end-user distribution. An .HMX project file requires the original authoring software to compile the content into readable formats, and it is entirely unsupported by standard web browsers or generic document readers. Legacy game map files are even more restricted, locked entirely to the specific game engine that compiled them.
