About HPD files
The .hpd extension creates confusion because it serves three distinct, incompatible purposes depending on the software environment.
Most commonly (approx. 43%), an HPD file is a HotDocs PDF Document. These are standard PDF files encapsulated within a proprietary security wrapper generated by HotDocs (now part of CARET). While designed for secure legal document automation, this format causes significant friction for recipients who lack the specific HotDocs Player. Users often find themselves unable to open these files in standard viewers like Adobe Acrobat or web browsers. The pragmatic solution is converting the .hpd back to a standard PDF or DOCX to strip the proprietary wrapper and ensure universal accessibility for archiving and editing.
Secondly, .hpd files are Favorites Lists used by Uniden HomePatrol police scanners (managed via Sentinel software). These files store radio frequency data and system settings. Users often struggle to view this data outside the Sentinel ecosystem. Converting these to CSV or XLSX allows for easier sorting and editing in spreadsheet software like Microsoft Excel.
Less frequently, an HPD file may be a legacy HP LaserJet print file or an HP SmartStream design package. These are often essentially ZIP containers or raw raster data that modern operating systems cannot preview. For these, converting to JPG or TIFF is necessary for visual verification.
Convert.Guru analyzes your HPD file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted HPDF, C4, JPG, PDF, 51, 23 and 80 files.
The HPD Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our HPD converter.
