The .HMS file extension primarily serves two highly specialized engineering functions. Most commonly, it is a ZIP-compressed measurement data and report file generated by Hexagon Metrology PC-DMIS. In other contexts, it is a Hydrologic Modeling Project file used by the US Army Corps of Engineers' HEC-HMS software to simulate precipitation-runoff processes. Both formats are proprietary and highly restrictive. Users frequently need to convert these files because sharing raw .HMS data with clients or stakeholders who lack expensive metrology software or specialized hydrologic modeling tools is impossible. The major disadvantage of the .HMS format is data lock-in. To bypass these limitations, users often extract the underlying ZIP archive (for PC-DMIS files) to retrieve accessible formats like CSV or TXT, or convert HEC-HMS reports to PDF for universal viewing.
