Convert a file to HMS

To convert other file formats to the "Industrial Measurement" file type, you need software like PC-DMIS or a similar tool.

About HMS files

The .hms extension is shared by two distinct industrial formats, creating frequent confusion.

1. Hexagon PC-DMIS Measurement File (Primary)

Most commonly, this is a Human Measurement System file generated by PC-DMIS, the world's leading Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) software. These files contain critical quality assurance data, measurement plans, and inspection reports.

The Problem: PC-DMIS is expensive, proprietary enterprise software. Users without a license cannot view the inspection results inside the .hms file.
The Solution:

2. HEC-HMS Hydrologic Project

These are project files for the Hydrologic Modeling System developed by the US Army Corps of Engineers. They define watershed simulations, precipitation models, and river routing parameters.

The Problem: The file is a project index, not a simple document. You cannot "convert" the project file itself into a single image or spreadsheet because it relies on external data assets.
The Solution:

Convert.Guru analyzes your HMS file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted CONTROL, BASIN and LYS files.

The HMS Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our HMS converter.
