The .HL7 file is a specialized data message used almost exclusively in the healthcare industry to exchange patient records, laboratory results, and billing information. It adheres to the framework set by Health Level Seven International. These files are typically routed and processed by medical integration engines like Mirth Connect or major Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems.
Working with .HL7 files outside of a hospital IT environment is extremely frustrating. The traditional HL7 v2 format is heavily compressed and relies on obscure pipe (|) and caret (^) delimiters (e.g., MSH|^~\&|). It is not human-readable and standard web browsers or word processors cannot parse the data. Furthermore, despite being a "standard," almost every medical software vendor implements the format differently, leading to severe compatibility issues.
To make this data usable for analytics or administration, users must convert .HL7 to structured formats like XML, JSON, or CSV. For basic reading, converting to TXT or PDF is preferred. Occasionally, some .HL7 files act as wrappers for embedded PDF medical reports.
