The .HKI file extension is most widely recognized as a Hotkey Profile used by the classic Real-Time Strategy game, Age of Empires II. These binary files store a player's custom keyboard shortcuts and command bindings. While critical for competitive play, the format is proprietary and not human-readable. Users cannot simply open a .HKI file in Notepad to view or print their layout. This can be a major source of frustration when players attempt to share strategies, back up settings, or migrate their "muscle memory" to the modern Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition, which utilizes a different format (.HKP).
A secondary, technically distinct use of this extension is for WinHKI Archives. These are compressed files created by the legacy software WinHKI. Users encountering these often find themselves locked out of their data, as modern standard archivers like 7-Zip or WinRAR do not natively support extracting this obsolete format.
