About HDS files
An .HDS file typically serves one of several highly specialized, proprietary functions. It is most frequently used as a document component file by HotDocs, storing automated template data. Alternatively, it functions as a split virtual hard disk or snapshot file within Parallels Desktop, or as a DRM license store for Microsoft Windows Media and PlayReady. The primary disadvantage of the .HDS format is its strict vendor lock-in and lack of native interoperability. HotDocs files cannot be natively edited in standard word processors without exporting. Parallels .HDS disk files are often part of a larger bundle and are entirely unreadable by competing hypervisors like VMware or VirtualBox. Microsoft DRM license files are intentionally encrypted and locked to specific hardware profiles, meaning they cannot be modified or easily transferred. Conversion targets depend entirely on the file's origin. For document generation, converting to DOCX or .PDF/A is necessary for web sharing and archiving. If dealing with a Parallels disk file, users typically need to convert the parent image to VMDK or VHD for cross-platform virtualization. Firmware or DRM files generally cannot and should not be converted, as altering them breaks their cryptographic signatures. The HDS Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our HDS converter.
