A .GWD file is a design project created by Samsung Galaxy Watch Studio (formerly known as Gear Watch Designer). It serves as the source code for custom smartwatch faces, encapsulating XML layout definitions, fonts, and raster assets like PNG background images and hands.
A common issue for users is that a .GWD file is a project file, not an installable application. You cannot simply transfer this file to a Galaxy Watch to apply the face; it must first be compiled into a TPK (Tizen Package) or an Android-compatible binary within the studio software. Furthermore, because the format is specific to Samsung's proprietary workflow, it cannot be opened by standard graphics editors like Adobe Photoshop or GIMP.
However, practically speaking, the .GWD format is a renamed ZIP archive. If your goal is to recover the design assets - such as the background image or icon resources - you do not need the heavy Samsung IDE. You can convert the container by renaming the extension to ZIP and extracting the contents. For archiving or sharing the visual design without the logic, converting the preview image inside to a standard JPG or PDF is the most compatible workflow.
