The .gwd file format is a smartwatch face design project created by Galaxy Watch Studio (previously known as Gear Watch Designer). It stores custom watch face designs, including backgrounds, clock hands, and complications, intended for deployment on Samsung wearable devices.
The primary software used to open, edit, and compile these files is Samsung's Galaxy Watch Studio. This tool allows developers to assemble visual elements and export them as compiled packages for Tizen or WearOS smartwatches.
The .gwd format is highly specialized and proprietary. It cannot be opened directly by web browsers, standard image viewers, or mobile phones. Users often face challenges when trying to share their designs for quick feedback, as the recipient must install the heavy, specialized authoring software just to view the watch face.
