About GWC files

A .GWC file is primarily a Groundspeak Wherigo Game Cartridge used by the Wherigo platform for GPS-based, real-world adventure games. These files contain compiled game logic (written in Lua), GPS coordinates, and media assets like images and audio. They are executed by the Wherigo Player on GPS receivers and smartphones. Alternatively, a .GWC file can function as a Cisco Modem Configuration Backup for Cisco Systems hardware, or occasionally as XML-based surveying data for GEOSOFT Creator.

Users often attempt to convert .GWC files because they want to extract embedded media (like JPG or MP3 files) or review the raw map data without launching the game. The main disadvantage of the Wherigo format is that it is heavily proprietary and compiled specifically for target devices. You cannot open it in a standard text editor or web browser, and editing requires the original uncompiled .GWZ source file. Cisco configuration backups are similarly restricted, designed for machine restoration rather than human reading.

The best target format for a Wherigo .GWC file is an extracted archive like ZIP, which yields access to the internal assets. For configuration variants, converting to TXT or XML is the most practical choice. However, because these are highly specialized, closed formats, standard online converters universally fail to process them. Often, only the original compiling software can properly read or export the data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format - like plain text in Cisco or GEOSOFT files, or unencrypted media in a cartridge - viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your GWC file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The GWC Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our GWC converter.
