About GTAR files

A .GTAR file is a GNU Tar Archive, a container format used to bundle multiple files and directories into a single object. While it is a standard format in Unix and Linux environments (maintained by the Free Software Foundation), approximately 76% of .gtar files encountered by average users today are large data exports from Google Takeout. These archives are often internally compressed using GZIP, making them functionally similar to .TAR.GZ or TGZ files.

The key problem for users is that Microsoft Windows does not natively support opening .gtar files via double-click, leading to "Windows cannot open this file" errors. Furthermore, these archives can be massive (multi-gigabyte), making them difficult to upload or share. Users typically convert .gtar files to ZIP to gain immediate access to their photos, emails, and documents using standard operating system tools, or to 7Z for better compression ratios during archiving.

Convert.Guru analyzes your GTAR file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted TAR, TDO and EX$ files.
