Extract text from Tanner or karaoke data files (TDO)

The .TDO extension serves two distinct, highly specialized purposes that often confuse users. Most commonly, it is a Tanner Database Object, a proprietary binary file used by L-Edit (now part of Siemens EDA) for designing integrated circuit (IC) layouts and MEMS. These files contain the full hierarchical database of a chip design, including layers, cells, and connectivity. The friction arises because .TDO is an internal working format, not an exchange standard. It is completely unreadable by standard CAD tools like AutoCAD or open-source viewers. If you have a .TDO file without the expensive L-Edit license, you are effectively locked out of the data. The pragmatic solution for chip manufacturing is converting this internal database into GDSII (the industry standard for photolithography) or OASIS for smaller file sizes. For documentation or mechanical checking, converting to DXF is necessary.
Alternatively, a .TDO file may be a karaoke data file generated by TJ Media systems. These contain the song sequencing and lyrics but are formatted for specific hardware players. Users often find these on karaoke hard drives and are frustrated to discover they cannot be played by VLC Media Player or converted to MP3 without specific decoding tools. Legacy users might also encounter .TDO files from the discontinued BibleWorks software, acting as Translation Dictionary Objects.
