About GSO files

A .gso file is primarily a proprietary database file created by GoldenSection Notes and WinOrganizer. It functions as a personal organizer data file, storing a tree-structured hierarchy of notes, contacts, passwords, and task lists. In some instances, a .gso file might also be an internal game graphic effect file used by the Perfect World game engine.

The core problem with the .gso format is its heavily closed, proprietary binary architecture. It was designed specifically for early 2000s Windows productivity software and completely lacks native support across modern web browsers, macOS, or mobile operating systems. If you stop using the native software, your personal data is effectively trapped. Furthermore, if a .gso file becomes corrupted due to a system crash, recovering your notes and passwords is notoriously difficult without specialized database recovery tools.

Because of these extreme software limitations, users must urgently convert their legacy data to open, universally readable formats. The best conversion targets are RTF, TXT, or HTML. Exporting to HTML or RTF preserves your text, basic paragraph formatting, and embedded images. However, you will permanently lose the interactive tree-structured navigation and specialized database features of the original software.

Unfortunately, standard online converters invariably fail to process .gso files. The data structure is uniquely coded and often password-protected, meaning only the original software or the free GoldenSection Reader can accurately parse and export the internal records. Despite these hurdles, just drag and drop your file to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible using convert.guru. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded text format, viewing or partial conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your GSO file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted NTF, SDOC and NCF files.

The GSO Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our GSO converter.
