A .GRG file is primarily a proprietary automotive tuning file generated by DiabloSport handheld programmers, specifically for General Motors (GM) vehicles. These files contain the binary mapping data (fuel tables, spark advance, transmission shift points) required to reflash the vehicle's Engine Control Unit (ECU). They are typically created when a user backs up the stock firmware or downloads a custom tune using devices like the DiabloSport Predator 2 or inTune i3.
From a practical standpoint, dealing with .GRG files on a PC is frustratingly restrictive. Because they are designed to communicate directly with hardware via the OBD-II port, they are heavily encrypted and often VIN-locked to a specific vehicle. You cannot simply double-click to open them in a text editor or spreadsheet; doing so usually results in garbled binary noise. Furthermore, attempting to modify them without the specific DiabloSport ChipMaster Revolution (CMR) software suite can corrupt the checksum, rendering the file useless and potentially bricking an ECU if flashed. Users often find these files when backing up their tuner's SD card and erroneously try to convert them to CSV or PDF to view the parameters.
