A .gov file is not a standardized file format. Instead, it is typically a misnamed file downloaded from a government website. Users usually encounter this when a poorly configured browser or download manager incorrectly assigns the site's top-level domain (TLD) as the file extension. Under the hood, our data shows that roughly 45% of these files are actually PDF documents managed by Adobe Acrobat, while 11% are MHTML web archives saved by the Google Blink rendering engine.
The main disadvantage of a .gov file is that standard operating systems completely fail to recognize it. Double-clicking it results in an 'unrecognized file format' error. This makes it incredibly frustrating to access important tax forms, legal documents, or archived pages without manual intervention.
To fix this, you must identify the true format and rename or convert the file. Just drag and drop your file to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible. We recommend converting these to standard PDF or HTML files so your operating system knows exactly how to open them. Note that converting an MHTML archive to PDF may result in a loss of interactive web elements.
