About GIH files
A .GIH file is a specialized GIMP Image Hose brush format used exclusively by the open-source editor GIMP. Unlike a standard GBR brush which applies a single static stamp, a .GIH file acts as a container for multiple raster layers. These layers are "sprayed" onto the digital canvas based on specific parameters - such as pressure, angle, or random chance - allowing artists to paint dynamic textures like varying footprints, foliage, or chains without repetitive patterns.
The primary problem with .GIH files is their proprietary lock-in. They are effectively invisible to the operating system; you cannot preview them in Windows Explorer, macOS QuickLook, or standard image viewers. If you download a brush pack but do not have GIMP installed, you cannot see the assets inside. Furthermore, migrating these creative assets to industry-standard tools like Adobe Photoshop or Procreate is difficult because the "hose" logic (the metadata controlling layer cycling) is not compatible with ABR or other brush engines.
To make these files usable outside of GIMP, the most pragmatic solution is converting them to standard raster formats. Converting to PNG (often resulting in a sprite sheet or a multi-page file) preserves transparency and quality, allowing you to re-import the raw textures into other design software. For quick cataloging or previewing without launching an editor, converting to JPG is the most accessible option. Just drag and drop to determine the format, view the contained layers, and convert them.

The GIH Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our GIH converter.
