About XWD files

The .xwd file is a raw X Window Dump image, a legacy raster format generated by the X Window System (X11) on Unix and Linux servers. Created using the command-line utility xwd, these files capture a pixel-perfect snapshot (dump) of a window or the entire screen buffer.

Because .xwd files are designed for internal system use, they store uncompressed pixel data that matches the specific color depth and architecture of the source display (often resulting in large file sizes and compatibility issues on other hardware). They are not supported by standard web browsers, mobile phones, or most default Windows/macOS image viewers like Microsoft Photos or Preview. To use these screenshots in documentation, websites, or emails, users must convert them to standard formats like PNG (for lossless quality), JPG (for compression), or PDF (for archiving).

Users also converted XVFB_SCREEN0, XDW, XCF, APM, PNM, PNG and JPG files.

The XWD Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our XWD converter.
