About GID files

The .GID file extension is primarily associated with Windows Help Global Index files. These are hidden system files automatically generated by older versions of Microsoft Windows when a user opens a standard HLP (Windows Help) file. The operating system uses the .GID file to index search terms, making topic lookups significantly faster. A secondary, less common use is found in the video game Ragnarok Online, where it functions as a proprietary item data file.

The main disadvantage of the .GID format is that it is obsolete and completely proprietary. It relies heavily on the deprecated winhlp32.exe program, which Microsoft no longer includes in modern operating systems like Windows 10 or Windows 11. Because it is a compiled, binary index rather than a standard document, users cannot simply open it in a text editor to read the help topics. The format requires the exact legacy operating environment to function. Furthermore, these files often clutter hard drives and confuse users who are trying to archive old software documentation. Standard online converters fail to process .GID files because they expect standard document formats, not compiled indexing data.

If you are trying to recover legacy documentation, your best target formats are typically PDF, HTML, or TXT - however, you usually need to convert the parent HLP file rather than the .GID index itself. Because this is a closed, proprietary format, extracting meaningful data directly from the index is difficult. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your GID file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted HLP, CNT, LOG, DL_ and ETL files.

The GID Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our GID converter.
