Convert a file to GEM

To convert other file formats to the "Encrypted Video or Package" file type, you need software like GemPlayer or RubyGems or a similar tool.

About GEM files

The .GEM file extension has several entirely different use cases, making it a frustrating format to handle. Most commonly, it is an encrypted educational video file used by the GemPlayer software (often distributed by Taleem). These files lock video content behind proprietary DRM to prevent unauthorized sharing or piracy. Alternatively, developers encounter .GEM files as package archives for the Ruby programming language. Managed via RubyGems, these files contain a library or application (a "gem") along with its metadata, packed in a TAR archive.

Beyond video and coding, a .GEM file can also be a Graphic Environment Manager vector metafile from the 1980s by Digital Research, a modern clothing pattern design saved by Gemini CAD Systems (which is a renamed ZIP file), or even a 3D geoid model for Trimble surveying software.

The disadvantages of the .GEM format are obvious. If it is a video, you are locked into using proprietary, often unpolished video players that do not work on smart TVs or modern mobile browsers. If it is a Ruby package, you must have the Ruby environment installed to unpack it natively. Older vector metafiles and CAD patterns are completely inaccessible without niche, expensive desktop software.

You need a realistic workaround. For encrypted .GEM videos, decryption is often restricted by DRM, but if you own the content, you may attempt to convert it to standard video formats like MP4 or MKV for universal playback. For Ruby developer files, converting or unpacking to TAR or ZIP allows you to inspect the source code instantly without a dev environment. If you have a Gemini CAD file, converting it to a standard ZIP reveals the internal pattern data. For legacy vector graphics, convert to SVG or EPS for modern web and print use. Just drag and drop your file here to analyze and convert it securely right in your browser.

The GEM Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our GEM converter.
