About G01 files

A .g01 file is a specialized geometry data file generated by HEC-RAS (Hydrologic Engineering Center - River Analysis System). It defines the physical shape of a river system, storing critical hydraulic data like cross-section coordinates, reach lengths, and bridge/culvert dimensions. These files are typically part of a project sequence, where .g01 represents the first geometry version, .g02 the second, and so on.

For non-engineers, the main drawback is that .g01 files are plain ASCII text but are unintelligible without the host software. While you can open them in Notepad to see raw coordinate lists, you cannot visualize the river banks or hydraulic structures without HEC-RAS or a compatible GIS viewer like Flood Modeller. Users often need to convert these files to PDF for engineering reports or export them to DXF and Shapefile formats for use in AutoCAD or ArcGIS.

Convert.Guru analyzes your G01 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted F01, HYD and F03 files.

The G01 Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our G01 converter.
