Convert HYD to another file type
To convert your HYD file to another format, you need Hydraulic Toolbox or other Data software.
Convert a file to HYD
To convert other file formats to the "Engineering Project Data" file type, you need software like Hydraulic Toolbox or a similar tool.
About HYD files
A .HYD file is primarily a project file created by the FHWA Hydraulic Toolbox, a suite of calculators used by civil engineers for modeling bridge scour, channel stability, and storm drains. These files contain complex mathematical inputs, hydraulic coefficients, and cross-section geometry that cannot be interpreted by standard text editors or generic CAD viewers. Users often encounter these files when reviewing government infrastructure projects or sharing data between hydrology teams.
A secondary but significant use of the .HYD extension is for Stormwater hydrograph data associated with HydroCAD or Soil hydraulic properties in HYDRUS-1D.
The real problem for users is proprietary lock-in: .HYD files are binary or specialized XML containers that require the specific engineering engine to calculate results. You cannot simply "open" them in Excel to see the data. To convert these files for broader use:
For Reports & Archiving: The best approach is to open the file in the free FHWA Hydraulic Toolbox and use the built-in "Generate Report" feature to save as PDF or RTF.
For Data Analysis: Use the software's export function to convert tabular results to CSV or XLSX for use in Microsoft Excel.
For CAD Workflows: Some data can be exported to DXF for import into AutoCAD or MicroStation.
Convert.Guru analyzes your HYD file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert HYD file to CSV, JSON, XML, YAML, YML, TOML, INI, CFG, CONF, DAT, DB or SQL, you can use Hydraulic Toolbox or similar software from the "Hydraulic Project Data" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DBF, XML, SQLITE, XLSX, SQL, TSV, ACCDB, YAML, MDB, CSV, ODS or JSON files to HYD, try Hydraulic Toolbox or another comparable tool in the "Hydraulic Project Data" category.
The HYD Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our HYD converter.
