About FXS files

The .fxs file format is primarily a WinFax PRO Fax Document containing legacy black-and-white fax images created by Symantec software. Because the extension is heavily overloaded, an .fxs file might also be a compiled YANG data model for Cisco Network Services Orchestrator (NSO), a visual effects data file for Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, a save game file for Bethesda's Fallout 3 or New Vegas, an XML shape file for Boris FX Silhouette, or an encrypted video lecture for the Fast Education player.

Dealing with .fxs files is notoriously frustrating because the primary software, WinFax PRO, is completely obsolete and incompatible with modern 64-bit operating systems. Opening legacy faxes requires outdated environments or specialized image viewers. Cisco's .fxs files are compiled binaries, meaning they are unreadable by humans without a decompiler. Similarly, encrypted video .fxs files use strict Digital Rights Management (DRM) to lock users into proprietary viewers like the Hoven HBV Player, preventing standard playback.

For archival purposes, you should immediately convert legacy WinFax .fxs files to PDF or TIFF to prevent data loss. For web sharing, convert them to PNG or WebP.
