.FXM files are most commonly associated with Symantec WinFax PRO, a discontinued software suite used extensively in the 1990s and early 2000s to send and receive faxes directly from a PC. In this legacy environment, the .FXM file stores the raster image data of a received fax document. Beyond legacy faxing, the extension is actively used by the FxMonster plugin for Adobe After Effects as a motion graphics preset pack. It is also utilized as a 3D visual effects model in Smilegate FX-Tool, a CAM part data file by Felder Group, and a motion file in pmG messiahStudio.
The main disadvantage of .FXM fax files is their extreme obsolescence. Symantec WinFax was discontinued over two decades ago. Modern 64-bit operating systems cannot natively open these files, and attempting to view them natively often requires setting up a virtual machine with Windows XP. Similarly, the 3D and animation variants are highly proprietary, script-based or binary files that are completely useless outside their specific host software.
To rescue legacy fax records, convert .FXM to PDF/A or TIFF for long-term archiving, or PNG for quick web viewing.
